I feel more energetic and vibrant now than I did 10-15 years ago. That's the power of taking control of my health.
For years, I struggled with chronic muscle and joint pain. I visited countless doctors, physiotherapists, and chiropractors, desperately trying to find the cause and get relief. Despite all the treatments, the pain persisted, and I grew increasingly frustrated, angry, and miserable. I felt resigned to living with this pain for the rest of my life.
Until that one week - the week I started an elimination diet. That's when everything changed. I felt lighter, energized, and motivated to be active again. The weights on my neck and shoulders had disappeared. It was the inflammation all along! All those years, my muscles had been inflamed, causing my persistent pain.
Whenever I had a sprained ankle, or I ached from climbing the hill to catch fishes and little crabs, my father used to make ginger pastes or rubs - natural remedies rooted in traditional Chinese medicine principles: 不通則痛 - "Not Unimpeded, Then Pain" 不榮則痛 - "Not Thriving, Then Pain". I always knew that our body is interconnected. Studying Functional Medicine, I learnt about mind-body interconnection, everything just clicked, this explains everything.
"Not Unimpeded, Then Pain" (不通則痛)
This refers to blockages or obstructions in the body's various systems and channels (like meridians and blood vessels).
When these pathways are not flowing freely and smoothly, it can lead to localized or widespread pain.
"Not Thriving, Then Pain" (不榮則痛)
This points to a lack of proper nourishment and nutrients to the body's organs and tissues.
If an area is deprived of the necessary "life force" and nutritional support, it can manifest as painful symptoms.

My parents have always been comparatively much older than my friends' parents. From a young age, I worried about their health and whether they would die early. They didn't even have health insurance, which compounded my concerns. I always knew the only way to avoid sickness and early death was for them to be as healthy as possible.
My father reads about TMC every evening, yet, he was living with poor diet and lacks exercise, gradually his health deteriorated. He suffered three debilitating strokes, and the last one left him bedridden and in a care facility for the final years of his life. He endured immense physical and mental anguish - paralysis, dementia, the inability to communicate or care for himself. It was heartbreaking to witness his suffering.
Visiting him in the care home became increasingly painful, as he was no longer responsive and we felt helpless. When he finally passed away, it was a bittersweet relief, though it left a massive hole in my heart. I wished I had known more about proactive, functional approaches that could have helped improve his health and quality of life, sparing him and our family from such profound suffering.
This experience has motivated me to become a functional medicine health coach. I want to help people get healthy so their families do not have to go through the pain.
